Immunisation is a simple, safe and effective way to protect your family from harmful diseases this holiday season and into 2020. Visit your doctor for general health and vaccination advice.

Immunisation not only protects you and your family but also others in your community, by reducing the spread of preventable diseases.

Children starting school in 2020 must have up-to-date immunisations to enrol.

These vaccinations help protect children from highly infectious and severe diseases including whooping cough and measles.

Travel health

If you’re travelling overseas during the school holidays, you may need vaccinations or medication – both for general health protection and for region specific diseases.

If you’re travelling to the Northern Hemisphere, you may even need a flu shot.

NSW schools respond to bushfires

Many schools are responding to the catastrophic fire rating that is affecting communities across the state this week.

We are continuously updating the School safety page with a list of government and non-government schools, as well as TAFE NSW campuses that are currently non-operational.

While some schools are temporarily non-operational due to localised fires, many others in high-risk areas are non-operational as a precautionary measure.

Schools in some areas are being used as emergency evacuation centres at the direction of the Rural Fire Service.

For schools that are currently operational, school pickups and dropoffs will continue as usual. If your school is currently non-operational, it will likely remain so tomorrow.

Large scale distressing events affect our school communities in many ways. Headspace’s mental health support resource (PDF 100.52KB) is available to help students, teachers and school staff respond to the bushfires.

Is your child in Year 9 to 12 curious about their career choices? Now they can use LifeLauncher, a free online tool to explore and simplify their career choices.

Your child can explore courses and careers in-depth, at their own pace, anytime, anywhere and on any device. The tool includes 4,000 careers and 1,500 course options, all in one place.

How does it work?

Creative and Active Kids vouchers now available

Creative kids can now put a $100 voucher towards extra-curricular creative activities outside of school.

Together with Active Kids, this program aims to encourage more NSW children to participate in a range of extra-curricular activities such as coding, languages, circus, performing arts and visual arts.

Parents can apply for one $100 voucher for each child enrolled in school on the Creative Kids website and use it towards the cost of registration, participation or tuition. You just redeem the voucher with a registered provider in your area when making your payment.

This is a great opportunity for your child to become involved in a range of activities that will build on their education, growth and development.

The Game Changer Challenge is back

It’s not too late to become a Game Changer with applications for the Education Week challenge due by 7 June.

The Game Changer Challenge brings 16 teams from public schools across NSW – eight from primary and eight from secondary – to Sydney during Education Week in August for a three-day, intensive design-thinking workshop.

The Game Changer workshops, which start on Tuesday 6 August, includes teacher training in the use of design thinking as a teaching methodology and its application for school planning.

It also includes a team competition where schools will work under the guidance of experts from industry and academia to develop a solution to this year’s critical question: How might we humanise technology?

Department of Education Secretary Mark Scott has encouraged students and teachers to get behind the event as it highlights the critical thinking students will need to develop to succeed in the future.

“The Game Changer Challenge is an exciting initiative that helps educate and inform our students and teachers on how to integrate the problem-solving methodology of design thinking into the classroom,” Mr Scott says.

“It embraces the 21^st century skills our students will need to thrive in a globalised world such as collaboration, creative thinking and communication.

“This is a wonderful opportunity for our students at all levels to be involved in discussing and addressing a real-world issue that will affect their future lives. I encourage every school to get involved.”

The challenge is designed to make strong learning and teaching connections to the NSW syllabus specifically in the area of developing general capabilities such as critical thinking, collaboration, creativity, communication and problem-solving.

The challenge also provides teachers with an opportunity to gain exposure to the design thinking process and includes teacher resources to introduce this creative problem-solving methodology into the classroom.

Finalists will be selected based on a 60-second video that showcases your team’s vision around the question of humanising technology.

Your NAPLAN questions answered

The National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) is a point in time assessment for students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9. The tests assess the foundational skills in reading, writing, spelling and numeracy that are essential for every child to progress through school and life.

This year NAPLAN takes place between 14 and 16 May for paper tests and between 14 and 24 May for schools participating in NAPLAN Online.

NAPLAN data is used to help monitor student progress over time against a national measure and to identify areas of strength and improvement. It is used in combination with other school assessments to guide and support student learning.

My Community Project is a new NSW Government funding program that is all about local ideas, local projects and local decisions.

You can apply now for grants from $20,000 - $200,000 for projects that will make a difference to your community. Projects could include new playground equipment, sports facilities, paths or ramps to improve access, public art or a community service.

The local community can vote for their favourite projects in July and successful projects will be announced in September.

Bring back memories, not measles

With school holidays just around the corner, it’s time to visit your doctor to check that you and your family are fully protected against measles, before you travel overseas.

Measles is a serious, highly contagious, viral illness that is easily spread through the air when an infectious person coughs, sneezes or breathes. If you and your family are not fully vaccinated, or have never been vaccinated, you are at risk of contracting measles.

Not sure if you’re fully protected?

In Australia, the measles vaccine (MMR) consists of 2 doses. If you’re not sure whether you’ve had 2 doses of the measles vaccine, visit your doctor. It’s safe to receive another dose.

Children born in Australia

If your children were born in Australia, they may have received the measles vaccine at 12 months old and the second dose at 18 months, in accordance with the National Immunisation Program.
If you have a baby under 12 months old, consult your doctor about getting their measles vaccination.

Adults born in Australia

Born before 1966 – you were most likely exposed to measles as a child and are generally considered to be immune. If in doubt, ask your GP.
Born between 1966 and 1994 – you may not have received 2 doses. Talk to your doctor about the free vaccine if you’re unsure.
Born after 1994 – the National Immunisation Program offers 2 doses, and you can check your vaccination status using the Australian Immunisation Register.

The RAM supports schools through needs-based funding to ensure a fair, efficient and transparent allocation of funds. Our school has the flexibility to make local decisions based on the specific needs of our students.

IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT - Statement of Accounts

It has come to our attention that there are some errors in the recent school Statement of Accounts that have been mailed out to parents.

As you may be aware, the Department of Education has recently transitioned all NSW Public Schools to a centrally operated financial and student management system.

In some cases, the accounts that have been recently issued have contained incorrect information due to a system error beyond the school's control. In response to this issue, we have contacted DoE system management (EDConnect) to seek rectification of this matter.

Parents are requested to contact the school if they believe there are any errors in the accounts that they have received from Tamworth High School – we are only too happy to amend accounts as soon as EDConnect provide the school with corrective action.

We apologise for any inconvenience this has caused and thank you for your patience in this matter.

The Australian Government has released a discussion paper about ‘Supported School Transport and the National Disability Insurance Scheme' on their website https://engage.dss.gov.au .

As the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) is rolled out across Australia, this paper asks for your feedback on how supported school transport could work under the NDIS.

This is your opportunity to have your say via a submission on how you would like to see supported school transport operate in our State. The consultation period will end on 20 July at 5:00pm.

There will be some face-to-face consultations held throughout the state, full details will be updated on their website when they are available.

Each year, more than 220,000 students sit for their Yr12 exams. Many of them feel that their entire future depends on their results, making this exam period potentially one of the most stressful times of all their years at school. Year 12 at Tamworth HS have their half-yearly exams coming up and we thought this was an excellent time to briefly discuss exam stress management.

We all experience stress and anxiety differently. It's good to feel some stress, as this can help to enhance our performance. However, too much stress can affect not only your performance at school but also your life more generally. Feeling no stress at all could mean that you have disengaged from doing your best.

YEAR 11 SENIOR STUDY PROGRAM

In the Senior Study Program at the end of February all students created a personalised Assessment Calendar that highlights when their Assessment Tasks are due and when exams have been scheduled.
The aim of the calendars is to assist your child in managing their time and tasks, reduce the stress associated with leaving tasks until the last minute and ensuring your child has the time to complete work to the best of their ability.
Calendars should be on display to act as a visible reminder to your child and you as to when tasks are due. More copies are available on request.
Please spend time looking at the schedule with your child. Together you can add in family trips/events/responsibilities which may impact on your child's ability to study or complete assessment tasks.
Calendars can also help your child with scheduling part time work which should be kept to a minimum during exam / peak assessment times.
Keep your eyes out for more ways you can support your child through their Senior Schooling.

In 2018 NAPLAN Tamworth High School will begin moving from pencil and paper tests to online tests. A small proportion of NSW schools will do NAPLAN Online in 2018.

The move to NAPLAN Online means new benefits for your child's school including better assessment and greater student engagement.

IMPORTANT NOTICE - Coles Southgate

Working in partnership with the community is an important focus at Tamworth High School. With this in mind, we are addressing the flow of students to Coles Southgate of a morning and afternoon. Students gathering at this location have been the cause of some concern in the past, in terms of safety and the public image of our student body and school.

Students have all been informed that those travelling to school via bus are not permitted to ...walk to Coles once they have arrived at the school. Students waiting for buses in the afternoon must remain at school, not taking themselves to Coles and returned some time later to catch their bus. Staff is on duty in key locations to remind students of this expectation. Ignoring staff requests to return to school will be treated as defiance and the usual consequences will be applied.

We ask that you support us in this important change by speaking with your child and ensuring they understand our expectation. Any clarification needed on this change should be directed to our Deputy Principals.

They are available for rent through Mr Patfield in the Library before school and during recess and lunch.

Cost is a one off bond payment of $25.00 (refunded on relinquishing the locker and return of lock in good order) + $10.00/school year.

YEAR 10 2018 - Work Experience

Please be reminded that paperwork supporting our Year 10 Work Experience Program (for those students not attending the Northern Excursion) held during Weeks 1 and 2 of Term 2 is required to be returned to school by Week 5, Term 1 (Friday 2 March 2018). Paperwork should be delivered to the Work Experience Coordinator, Mrs Shelley Walters in the Careers Office in G Block.

This paperwork was sent home with Students late last year to allow them time during their holidays to begin sourcing placements and is also attached to this notice.

If students or parents are having difficulties it is important that assistance is sought through the school, this program is being coordinated by Mrs Shelley Walters, Work Experience Coordinator, who can be contacted on 02 6765 7888.

HEALTH NOTICE - Whooping Cough

There has been a recent incident of whooping cough (pertussis) reported at Tamworth High School

Coughing spreads the infection to others nearby. Whooping cough caught at school can spread to any younger brothers and sisters at home. Whooping cough can be especially dangerous for babies.

Whooping cough starts like a cold and progresses to bouts of coughing that can last for many weeks. Older children may just have a cough that is persistent and is worse at night. The infection can occur even in fully-vaccinated children.

Children with symptoms should see a GP.
If your doctor diagnoses whooping cough, please let the school know and keep your child at home until they have taken 5 days of antibiotics. Keep coughing children away from babies.
Whooping cough vaccines give good protection against infection but immunity fades. If your school-aged child has younger siblings, it's a good idea to check that they are up to date with their vaccines.

STAGE 4 SCHOLARSHIP APPLICATION 2018

Scholarship Application

Every year the Tamworth High School Parents and Citizens Association Inc. award $500.00 scholarships to assist with school related expenses e.g. excursions, uniforms, school equipment, music lessons etc. and is ideally spread over the Stage 4 period i.e. $250.00 during Year 7 and $250.00 during Year 8.

Applications can be School Nominated or Student Nominated and need to be submitted via the application forms attached.

Applications are now open for students commencing Year 7 in 2018 with Tamworth High School and need to be submitted to the THS P&C Secretary no later than the end of Week 2, Term 4 (Friday 20 October 2017).

This year the P&C are looking to award their scholarships whilst addressing the vision statement of Tamworth High School:

WORK EXPERIENCE OPPORTUNITY - FIRE & RESCUE NSW

Fire & Rescue NSW has a dedicated Work Experience program open to any high school in NSW. Each week they take up to 10 students from a variety of schools to give them an introduction to work life. In 2016, 77 secondary schools participated in the program, with students coming from as far as Cootamundra and Narrabri to take part. Experience shows that classes fill up quickly, particularly in the second half of the year and students miss out if they don't apply ahead of time. YEAR 7 - NSW SCHOOL VACCINATION PROGRAM

Each year NSW Health works in partnership with schools to offer the vaccines recommended by the National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) for adolescents as part of the school vaccination program.

In 2017 the following vaccines will be offered to Year 7 students:

dTpa vaccine (Diphtheria, Tetanus & Pertussis (whooping cough)) as a single dose
varicella vaccine (chickenpox) as a single dose; and
human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine in a 3-dose schedule at 0, 2 and 6 months (students who commence HPV vaccination in Year 7 but do not complete the course may be offered catch-up doses at school in Year 8)

Parent Information Kits have been sent home to parents/guardians. Year 7 will also recieve letters home to confirm date and time of their vaccinations. To consent to the vaccination of their child, parents/guardians are advised to:

read all the information provided
complete the consent form, including signing their name next to the vaccine/s they would like their child to receive
return the completed consent form to their child's school
ensure that their child eats breakfast on the day of the school vaccination clinic.

*The Parent Information Kits contain a consent form, information sheet and privacy statement that details how personal information will be collected, stored and utilised.

Parents/guardians who wish to withdraw their consent for any reason may do so by writing to the school Principal or phoning the school. The Procedure for Withdrawal of Consent is available on the NSW Health website at www.health.nsw.gov.au/immunisation.

To improve vaccination completion, students will be opportunistically offered any missed doses throughout the year where possible.

A Record of Vaccination will be provided to each student vaccinated at each clinic. Parents/guardians should ensure that this record is kept for future reference and should not assume that their child has been vaccinated if they do not receive this Record of Vaccination.

The NSW Teacher's Federation has endorsed a state wide industrial stop work meeting on Thursday 8 December 2016. Teaching staff from Tamworth High School will be attending this meeting.

Therefore, Tamworth High School will be operating with minimal supervision on Thursday 8 December 2016 from 8.30am - 10.15am. It is recommended that where possible parents seek alternate arrangements for their children during this time.

Europe Tour - West of the NSW Divide Choir & Wind Orchestra

During the September school holidays, a number of staff and students from Tamworth High School toured Europe as members and staff of the West of the NSW Divide Choir and Wind Orchestra.

We left Sydney on Sunday 25th September heading for Munich. From the plane we head for the salt mines having some fun before the hard work began. Once we arrived in Salzburg the tour really got underway with workshops at the Mozarteum for the band with an up and coming conductor and a worksho...p and performance with Kapellmeister at the Salzburg Dom. Both were absolutely amazing and set the tone for the rest of the tour. We performed in churches and opera houses and even a castle with a school visit more workshops and a night at the opera thrown in.

At all times the students and staff were exemplary in the behaviour and demeanour representing both Australia and Tamworth High School in the greatest light. Our final concert in the Saint Nicholas Church on the old square in Prague was both amazing and humbling. It was a pleasure to travel and make music with Mr Richard Sowden, Braedyn Brown, Di Merry, Tim Sullivan, Adam Batho, Cate Batho, Jordann Lavers and Kaitlyn Bailey.

On Wednesday 2nd November 2016, the Year 10 Science 1 class Skyped with Dr Karl Kruszelnicki. Dr Karl is the Julius Sumner Miller Fellow in the Science Foundation for Physics at the School of Physics, University of Sydney.

Students asked questions such as What is in a black hole?, Do multiverses exist? and How do contact lenses work? Dr Karl has also donated a number of his books to our school library for the use of students. It was a very enjoyable session.

TAMWORTH HIGH STUDENTS HEADING FOR EUROPE!

Congratulations to Cate Batho, Braedyn Brown, Diane Merry, Katelyn Bailey, Jordann Lavers, Timothy Sullivan and Adam Batho who have been selected as members of the "West of the Divide Ensemble and Choir".

They will be travelling to Europe to meet with 80 other students and 100 staff tutors and supports for a tour playing in Vienna, Salzburg, Prague and Budapest during the upcoming school holidays.

What an amazing achievement which will be an experience to remember for a lifetime!

Paris Knox & Sam Fulwood, Year 11 Indigenous Students, have been chosen to represent Indigenous Australia in the Oceania Cup Oztag Tournament held in New Zealand, December 2016.

Paris has been chosen to represent the U18's girls team and Sam has been chosen to represent the U18's boys team.

Paris & Sam both represented Indigenous Australia last year at the World Cup Oztag Tournament on the Sunshine Coast, with Paris being selected as co-captain for the U16's girls side.

We are expecting this tournament to be filled with loads of Culture!!

Captains meet the Governor

Our Captains travelled to Sydney last Wednesday to participate in the annual leadership program where student leaders meet with the NSW Governor and participate in a range of leadership development activities.

This is always a great experience and our captains Jess Browne and Ben Crocker have reported that this year's event was well worth the effort. Once again, our hard working Year 12 Adviser, Mr Porter was on hand to escort the students.

Open Girls Touch Football

The THS Opens Girls touch team travelled to Gunnedah on Wednesday 25th May to compete in a Gala Day, at which the Girls excelled. We were successful in both our games (9-1) against Oxley, then (7-4) against Gunnedah High.

The whole team played as a unit, all pitching in and supporting each other. Try scorers included Tayla King, Paris Knox, Georgia White and Bree Poetschka. The girls were very well behaved and Tamworth High were well represented.

Big Thanks to Mike Pett who was invaluable in donating his time and imparting knowledge and wisdom on the Touch field.

We're all looking forward to a big game on 12th June against Inverell!

Changes to Rural & Regional School Travel

IMPORTANT CHANGES

Application for School Bus Travel is NOW ONLINE.

As from the 12th May 2016 all applications for school bus travel passes in rural and regional NSW will need to be completed online, instead of using the blue coloured application paper form.

STEP 1

Complete the online application form for a NEW student at:

https://apps.transport.nsw.gov.au/ssts/applyNow

Parents/Guardians are required to nominate their home address and which bus company the student needs to travel between home and school, ie. Tamworth Bus Lines, Hannafords, Macphersons, Peel Valley.

STEP 2

Print, sign and date the completed application, then return it to the student's school for endorsement.

STEP 3

The school will then post the endorsed application to Transport NSW. Applicants will receive an email confirming the outcome of the application. If the application is approved, Transport for NSW will inform the bus operator who will send a school travel pass to the student's address. A parent or guardian must apply for students 15 years and under. Students 16 years and over must apply for themselves. Please note most students who already have a school travel pass in 2016 won't need to re-apply for next year. However, you need to update student details online if the student:

• Is moving from Year 2 to Year 3

• Is moving from Year 6 to Year 7

• Is changing schools or campuses

• Is changing address

HOW TO UPDATE YOUR DETAILS

If the student already has a school travel pass and their address, school or name changes, or the student is entering Years 3 or 7, the parent or student 16 years or over will need to UPDATE their details at:

www.apps.transport.nsw.gov.au/ssts/updatedetails

Further developments have been made with sourcing better quality uniforms for our students. These will be available at Lowes as their stocks change over.

Senior Boys Shirts (Summer and Winter) have been sourced in a better quality shirt and will include the THS Crest.

Senior and Junior Girls Shirts (Summer and Winter) have been replaced with a more tailored and flattering cut and double layered material at the front. This shirt will also accommodate the wearing of a tie.

Change of Colour for Junior Boys Shirt (Summer & Winter) and Junior Girls Shirt (Winter)

We have been working hard to improve our school uniform and in conjunction with the staff at Lowes we have selected a "Sky Blue" Junior Boys Shirt (Summer and Winter) and Junior Girls Shirt (Winter) which is a uniform change from the current "Ice Blue" versions and in line with the current Junior Girls Shirt (Summer). Below is an image of the Junior Boys Shirt (Summer) for consultation with our school community, we encourage comment from parents/guardians on this proposed change.

We have already received positive support from the P & C who have been heavily involved in the process of improving the THS uniform. This change would have a transition period of at least 2 years for families to get good wear out of their existing school uniforms.

ACCESS TO SCHOOL GROUND

Secondary Schools Renewal Program
Tamworth High School Rejuvenation Project (Capital Works 2015-2016)

Due to the capital works re-development at the front of Tamworth High School, access to the school grounds via the main Willis street entrance will not be possible for vehicle or pedestrian traffic from 21^ST December 2015 through to the end of Term 1 2016.

Alternative pedestrian access will be possible via other gate entrances along Willis Street for activities over the holiday break and in the new school year.

Once the capital works program is completed in 2016, the Willis Street entrance will be a dedicated pedestrian access. Vehicular access from Willis Street will be restricted to emergency vehicles only. The Jean Street entrance will be restricted to deliveries and staff. No visitor parking will be available via this entrance point.

From 2016, all parents and/or visitors to the school will need to park outside the school grounds and enter via the Willis Street entrance and report to the Administration Foyer. No parental access to the Student Administration Office will be possible without first visiting the main Administration Office.

We thank you for your assistance and cooperation with this exciting and important innovation at Tamworth High School.

Secondary Schools Renewal Program
Tamworth High School Rejuvenation Project (Capital Works 2015-2016)

I can proudly announce that the Secondary Schools Renewal Program is about to get started! Tenders closed a few weeks ago and the first meeting with the selected contractor was conducted last Monday. This major capital works program will be commencing this week, with works beginning on refurbishing the car park near the school oval. This will allow the front car park to be removed and transformed into a whole new frontage for Tamworth High School. In addition, the works includes renewing the front corner of the school on Kathleen and Willis streets. This exciting project represents the next phase of the regeneration of Tamworth High School. Besides providing much needed improvements to the appearance and access of the front of the school, it will also have a beneficial effect upon student safety as there will be no regular vehicle access to the front of the school to compete with students and other pedestrians arriving and leaving the school through the Willis street gates.

Changes to the Secondary Schools Tax File Number Program in 2015

The Secondary Schools Tax File Number (TFN) Program will not continue beyond 31 December 2014. This means that School TFN forms will no longer be processed beyond this date.

How students can apply for a TFN from 1 January 2015

The Australian Taxation Office in partnership with Australia Post is making it easier for individuals to apply for a TFN.

Students can now apply for a TFN online and have their identity verified through an interview at a participating Australia Post office.

Applying online is the fastest and most convenient way for students to get a TFN. More information on applying online can be found at ato.gov.au by searching for 'QC27248'

Students who are unable to visit a participating Australia Post office will need to complete the application form Tax file number - application or enquiry for individuals form (NAT 1432). More information about lodging this form can be found at ato.gov.au by searching for 'QC22604'.

School Based Trainees Complete their Training

Year 12 students, Thomas Ross and Tyler Classen, from the Tamworth High School Support Unit have an amazing achievement to celebrate as they enjoy the end of their high school careers. Thomas and Tyler have both completed a School Based Traineeship and achieved their Lifeskills HSC.

Tyler Classen has been working for three years with Country Capital Meats and was fortunate enough to secure his Traineeship in Meat Processing (Retail) at the start of Year 11. He has shown his committment by working two days per week and one day as work experience. Tyler is now looking at expanding his knowledge and experience with a new employer in 2015.

Thomas Ross has dedicated himself to his Hospitality Traineeship with Seafood and Kebab Bar at Tamworth Shopping World. He has consistently worked to complete his School Based Traineeship hours requirement and course work in just one year, rather than two.

Congratulations to both students who have learnt many valuable skills in the work place and developed a great work ethic.

Visit by Assistant Education Minister Victor Dominello

ASSISTANT Education Minister Victor Dominello is used to being in the thick of political debate but received an education from the next generation when he visited Tamworth High School on Friday, August 8.

Mr Dominello, Member for Tamworth Mr Kevin Anderson and Ruyth Dufty, Director Tamworth Schools, toured the school and stopped at the library to meet debating students.

Under the guidance of Miss Casey Deaves the school's debating teams have achieved great success so far this year and Mr Dominello was able to see, first hand, the skills being developed.

The students were debating the importance of Anzac Day and Mr Dominello was particularly interested given his role as Veterans Affairs Minister.

He also holds the Citizenship and Communities portfolio and that of Aboriginal Affairs.

With Year 12 students busy sitting trial HSC exams in the hall it was left to Year 11 leaders and members of the Junior AECG to welcome and guide the visiting guests during their stay.

Junior AECG students and AEO staff then accompanied the guests to the opening of the new Tamworth Opportunity Hub, which aims to create pathways for Aboriginal students that will help them gain employment or seek further education.
